How to use

How to gather materials

You want to find materials that are thick enough to auger a hole in without splitting. Depending on how much weight you want to place on the final product, you might need something sturdy (for a person) or any scrap (for a light-weight pot over the fire).

For pegs, you want to find ends that you can hammer the scottish eye into that are not much larger diameter than the eye itself. So 1-2" diameter branches or ends are ideal.

How to bore a hole

Lay your material in a sturdy place that is easy to hold onto

  1. Screw the tip of the auger end into the wood where you want to make the hole. The screw should easily bore into the wood.
  2. Place a 1" or smaller branch through the Scottish eye hold and create a handle
  3. Turn the auger in a clockwise manner as you slowly bore away wood for the hole. Depending on how hard the wood is, you may bore a hole quickly or you may need to be patient
  4. Clean the hole out occasionally by blowing or removing the tool and clearing it out

How to make a peg on the end of a branch

Place the branch in a sturdy position with the end you want to make into a peg facing up.

Find a hammar, mallet, block of wood, or rock you can use to pound the tool to make the peg. Then:

  1. Place the Scottish eye on the end of the wood where you want the peg with the sharp edge toward the wood
  2. Pound the dull end of the tool until you have made the desired depth in the wood
  3. Clean away the wood when finished

How to make a mallet

A mallet can be made by:

  1. Bore a hole into a block of wood
  2. Make a peg on the end of a sturdy branch that will be the handle
  3. Insert the peg end of the handle into the hole on the block
  4. Press the handle all the way into the block

How to make a table or chair

A chair or table is simply a sturdy surface with legs. Choose the length and number of legs depending on height and weight you wish to support. For each leg:

  1. Make a hole in the table and a peg on the end of a leg
  2. Insert the leg into the table
  3. Repeat for each leg
  4. Test the weight carefully before using
